Mars Finance News, according to CoinDesk, reports that Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated that Caribbean coastal cities such as Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha could utilize surplus renewable energy to become Bitcoin mining hubs. Gustavo Petro proposed involving the local largest indigenous community, Wayúu, in the project collectively and believes this move will significantly promote development in the Caribbean region. Currently, about 75% of Colombia’s electricity comes from renewable resources, and the plan aims to emulate Paraguay’s model of attracting miners by utilizing cheap clean energy. As U.S. miners shift towards AI computing, Colombia hopes to fill the global computing power gap by providing idle electricity.
