WM cites recycling as a factor in earnings growth

Waste Management Inc. (WM) reported a 13.5 percent year-on-year increase in net income for the first quarter of 2026, reaching $723 million, despite a quarter-on-quarter decline. CEO Jim Fish attributed this growth to disciplined pricing, cost optimization, and contributions from sustainability projects, including recycling and renewable energy initiatives. The company’s Recycling and Renewable Energy business units saw a $51 million increase in operating EBITDA, highlighting the strategic importance of these investments.
