Recently, I’ve been tinkering with various virtual-number SMS verification services again. I definitely ran into plenty of pitfalls before. Some platforms simply can’t receive SMS, while others take half a day to deliver the verification code. In the end, I sorted out a few that are actually pretty good and wanted to share them.

To be honest, if you’re only temporarily registering an overseas website or testing a verification-code API, buying a new SIM card is too much hassle. Verification-code platforms are basically that: they provide virtual numbers to receive SMS verification codes, covering multiple countries and regions worldwide, charging per use, and some also offer monthly plans. They protect your privacy and make testing much more convenient.

Among the platforms I’ve used, SMS-Activate and 5SIM have been the most stable. The verification codes usually arrive within 10 seconds, and they also have broad country coverage. Testing with US numbers works fine for Google and Twitter. Super Cloud SMS is pretty well optimized for domestic number ranges: US numbers take about 10–30 seconds, and domestic numbers are faster, roughly 5–20 seconds. Xiaoniao SMS verification is specifically tailored for domestic apps—things like Taobao messages come through in 5–15 seconds. Getsmscode is cheap, but sometimes less popular platforms may delay delivery.

There are a few traps to watch out for when using virtual numbers: some numbers are shared, which makes them more prone to risk controls; some websites directly block virtual number ranges; and during peak times, things may be slower. My experience is to top up several numbers as backups—if one becomes invalid, switch immediately. Some platforms support one-click number switching, and that feature is especially useful.

Also, never treat a virtual number as your long-term main number—privacy and security are simply not guaranteed. They’re best for temporary use, testing, or situations like registering small accounts.
