I came across an interesting ranking of currencies and passports from December of last year. It turns out that the most expensive currency in the world is not the dollar, as many think. The top is led by Middle Eastern money: Kuwaiti dinar, Bahraini and Omani rials. Then come the British pound and Swiss franc. The dollar is only in tenth place, and the euro is actually in ninth.

But here’s the funny part: the countries with the most powerful passports are not the same. Singapore, South Korea, and Japan lead in visa-free access. Then come European giants like Germany, France, and Spain. Switzerland and Britain are also in the top, but not in the first places.

It turns out that having an expensive currency is not the same as having a powerful passport. Kuwait with its dinar lags significantly in mobility, while Singapore, on the other hand, excels. It’s an interesting geographical puzzle when you think about which currency is the most expensive and where it’s really convenient to travel without a visa.
