Does anyone still remember the origin of the word HODL? I just looked back into the history and found a pretty interesting detail.
It all started in December 2013, when Bitcoin first surpassed the $1,000 mark — a truly historic milestone. But then the market turned sour, and the BTC price plummeted to $522 in a short period. Panic was definitely the dominant emotion at that time.
Right in the middle of this storm, a user posted on Bitcoin Talk an article titled "I AM HODLING" — but it was a typo. Instead of correcting it, he deliberately kept the mistake to emphasize something deeper: he knew he was a poor trader, incapable of buying at the bottom or selling at the top. So, instead of trying to time the market, he would just hold onto Bitcoin and ignore all the price fluctuations.
That’s how HODL was born — not from a complex strategy, but from a typo and a simple philosophy of patience. Today, this term has become part of the Bitcoin community’s DNA. When someone says they are a true hodler, you can quickly gauge how long they’ve been in the crypto world and how deep their knowledge runs. It’s like an ID card for the original crypto enthusiasts.
Every time I see someone use the word "hodler" or "hodling," I think of this story — a typo that shaped an entire investment philosophy and became a symbol of perseverance in the crypto world. Pretty special, right?
