Just pulled up bitcoin's January 1st prices over the years and it's wild to see how far we've come. Started from basically nothing back in 2011 at 30 cents, then jumped to 13 bucks in 2013. The volatility was insane through the mid-2010s, hitting 980 in 2017 before crashing to 3,694 in 2019.
Looking at more recent years, bitcoin hit 43k at the start of 2024, then climbed to nearly 94k by January 2025. This year started at 87,850 on January 1st, but we've seen some pullback since then—currently trading around 82k as of May. Still, seeing how the price has evolved from fractions of a cent to six figures is pretty insane when you think about it.
The whole trajectory really shows you how much adoption and institutional interest has changed the game. Whether you've been holding since the early days or just getting into bitcoin recently, these price snapshots on January 1st each year tell quite a story about where we've been.
