Recently, I was helping a friend test overseas application SMS verification, and it reminded me of the virtual number pitfalls I’ve encountered before. Honestly, buying a new SIM card every time is too troublesome; using a SMS verification platform is indeed a convenient solution, but the quality varies greatly—some don’t receive messages at all, others are painfully slow. After trying several options repeatedly, I finally found a few more reliable ones, so I’ll share them with everyone.
SMS-Activate works the best, with virtual numbers receiving messages incredibly quickly, usually within 10 seconds, and it covers many countries, making it suitable for cross-border testing. 5SIM has a user-friendly interface, clear API documentation, and can verify Google and Twitter accounts normally. If mainly for domestic applications, Super Cloud SMS and XiaoNiao receive messages well—US numbers take 10–30 seconds, domestic numbers are even faster, usually within 5–20 seconds. Getsmscode is inexpensive, suitable for light use, but may experience delays on less popular platforms.
Honestly, the biggest risk with virtual numbers is that they might be flagged or used by others. My experience is to prepare several backup numbers so you can switch immediately if one becomes invalid. During peak times (especially at night), the speed can slow down a bit, sometimes taking up to a minute, but switching to a different number range usually solves the problem. Also, never use virtual numbers as your long-term primary number; privacy and security cannot be guaranteed. If it’s just for testing interfaces, choosing any platform that supports API is enough; but for stable registration on overseas websites, it’s best to top up several numbers to feel more secure.
