Recently, I needed to use a virtual number to receive verification codes, and I realized that many people are still not very familiar with SMS verification platforms. Basically, it's renting a temporary phone number to receive SMS verification codes, which is especially suitable for registering overseas accounts or conducting API testing. I've encountered many pitfalls before, tried several platforms, some of which couldn't receive messages at all, others had delays of half a day, but I eventually summarized a few decent ones.
The principle of verification code platforms is actually very simple: service providers offer virtual numbers for you to use, and the verification codes are displayed directly in the backend. Unlike buying real SIM cards, which can be complicated, they charge per use or monthly, mainly to protect privacy and avoid spam. I’ve used SMS-Activate, which delivers codes incredibly fast—usually within 10 seconds—and covers many countries, making it especially suitable for cross-border testing. There’s also Super Cloud SMS, with US numbers typically receiving acknowledgment within 10 to 30 seconds, and Chinese numbers even faster, around 5 to 20 seconds; during peak times, it might be a bit slower.
If you need to use a certain number long-term, 5SIM and Xiaoniao Verification support bulk number modes, and their stability is pretty good. Xiaoniao Verification is especially suitable for testing domestic applications, with codes arriving in 5 to 15 seconds most of the time. Getsmscode is cheap and suitable for light usage. My advice is, if it’s just for API testing, any platform supporting API is enough; but if you need stable registration on a certain overseas website, it’s best to prepare several numbers so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid.
When using SMS verification platforms, there are a few pitfalls to watch out for. Shared numbers are often previously registered, and some verification codes may be delayed, especially for less common countries or applications. I usually choose reputable platforms and avoid buying cheap, unreliable ones. Some platforms also support one-click number switching, which is very practical and can save a lot of trouble. Lastly, I want to remind you that these platforms are mainly used to protect privacy and prevent advertising spam; do not use them for illegal or prohibited activities. Based on my experience, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the best overall, with low latency and full country coverage.
