I've noticed that many beginners in the crypto market don't even know what a pump is and how this scheme actually works. And yet, it is one of the most dangerous traps awaiting investors in this space.
The fact is, when the cryptocurrency market is growing so rapidly and is almost unregulated, it becomes a paradise for scammers. And one of their favorite tools is precisely price manipulation through creating artificial hype.
Here's how it usually happens. A group of people quietly buys large volumes of some little-known coin. At the same time, they start promoting its potential — posting on social media, creating noise in chats and forums. What is a pump in this context? Essentially, it is an artificial price surge created through false information and psychological pressure on other traders.
The price begins to rise because people see green candles and think they are missing out. Demand increases, and the price shoots up. And when it reaches the peak, those scammers start selling their assets en masse at inflated prices. The result? A sharp crash. And others are left with losses.
How to recognize that this is a pump? Pay attention to a few red flags. First, the price jumps without any real news or events to justify it. The coin just starts growing out of nowhere. Second, trading volume suddenly increases — this often accompanies manipulation.
Another sign is advice from unknown sources. If an unknown account messages you privately and urges you to buy the coin urgently because "this is the last chance," that’s a clear danger signal. Scammers love to create a sense of urgency.
As for protection, it’s quite simple. Always research the project before investing. Look at the team, the roadmap, real-world applications. Genuine projects are transparent and provide detailed information. Don’t fall for promises of quick riches — it doesn’t work.
Diversify your portfolio. Never invest all your money in one coin, especially if it shows signs of manipulation. And only trade on reputable, authoritative platforms that have systems to detect fraudulent activity.
Keep an eye on news in the crypto world, stay informed about regulatory changes. Being informed is your main tool for protection. When you understand what a pump is and how to recognize it, you are already halfway to avoiding these traps. The cryptocurrency market can be profitable, but only if you approach it with a cool head and common sense.
