I noticed an interesting contrast in the world of the Musk brothers. Kimbal Musk, Elon’s younger brother, seems to live in a completely different reality. Recently, he posted criticizing Trump’s tax policy, calling it a structural tax on American consumers. It’s amusing that this directly contradicts his brother’s position, but in the Musk family, that seems to be the norm.
Kimbal Musk is a billionaire, but his wealth (around $700 million) was not accumulated through startups like Tesla or SpaceX, but mainly through a small stake in Tesla shares. He is also known for his philanthropy and environmental concern. He has a signature visual trait — he constantly wears a cowboy hat, making him recognizable at any event.
In fact, Kimbal Musk and Elon look very similar physically: both were born in Pretoria, have the same square jaw, straight nose, and green eyes. Plus, both hold South African, Canadian, and American citizenship. But their personalities seem to have developed differently. Along with his younger sister Tosca, they experienced a difficult childhood — family violence, which led their mother Maya to divorce in 1979. After that, the family moved to Canada and the US.
In the early days, both brothers co-founded Zip2 — a software startup for business. The project was successful: they sold it to Compaq in 1999 for $307 million. That was their first major success, but then their paths diverged. Kimbal Musk chose the path of social entrepreneurship and philanthropy, while his brother continued building technological empires. Interestingly, despite all their disagreements over politics and strategy, the brothers clearly love each other — blood is not thicker than family ties.
