There's this dark chapter in crypto history that still gets people talking. Nikolai Mushegian, one of the co-founders behind MakerDAO, was found dead on a beach in Puerto Rico back in October 2022. He was only 29.
What makes this case stick with people is the timing. Hours before his body was discovered on Condado Beach in San Juan, Nikolai Mushegian had posted some pretty wild claims on social media. He was talking about intelligence agencies, trafficking rings, blackmail operations—the kind of stuff that sounds like a conspiracy theory until you realize the person saying it is gone.
The official narrative from local authorities was pretty straightforward: no signs of foul play, just a small head wound, and the beach is known for rough currents. Case closed, essentially. But here's where it gets complicated.
People who knew Nikolai Mushegian described him as genuinely brilliant, but also someone who'd been dealing with serious mental health struggles. Some in the crypto space, including figures like Brock Pierce, suggested it might have been self-inflicted. Others weren't so sure about that conclusion.
The crypto community never really let this one go. The conspiracy theories stuck around because of how everything lined up—the tweets, the location, the circumstances. Even now, years later, people are still questioning what actually happened to Nikolai Mushegian that day. Was it what it looked like, or was there something else going on? The investigation's official findings haven't fully put the speculation to rest, and honestly, that's probably why this case remains one of the more unsettling stories in crypto history.
