Recently, some brothers asked me about virtual phone numbers, so I’ll share the pitfalls I’ve encountered and the useful tools I’ve found.

Honestly, many times you really need a temporary number for verification, like testing certain overseas websites or doing API testing. Buying a new SIM card is too troublesome, so SMS verification platforms have become my go-to tools. I’ve tried quite a few—some don’t receive texts, some are painfully slow. Eventually, I found a few that are relatively stable.

First, let’s talk about the principle. SMS verification platforms are services that rent virtual phone numbers to receive verification codes. After registering on the platform, you select a country code, enter the number on the target website, and the verification code will be displayed directly on the platform page. Unlike regular numbers, these virtual numbers are usually pay-per-use, though some platforms also support monthly or long-term rental modes.

From my personal testing, the more stable ones include these: SMS-Activate is super fast, usually arriving within 10 seconds, with wide country coverage, especially suitable for cross-border applications; 5SIM has a user-friendly interface, clear API documentation, and can verify Google, Twitter, and others normally; Super Cloud SMS performs well with US and Chinese number segments, US numbers typically take 10-30 seconds, Chinese numbers are even faster, though during peak times it may slow down; Bird SMS mainly used for domestic app testing, arriving in 5-15 seconds, with good cost performance; Getsmscode is cheap and suitable for light use.

When using these virtual phone number platforms, a few points to note: some numbers are shared and prone to risk control; verification codes may have delays, especially for less common apps; it’s recommended to prepare several backup numbers so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid; never use virtual numbers as your long-term main number, as privacy and security are not guaranteed.

My experience is, if it’s just for API testing, choosing any platform that supports API is enough. But if you want stable registration on overseas websites, it’s best to prepare multiple virtual phone numbers so you can respond promptly if issues arise. Some platforms also support one-click number switching, which is super practical and saves a lot of trouble.

Finally, a reminder: SMS verification platforms should only be used for privacy protection, avoiding spam, or testing purposes. Do not use them for illegal activities. Based on my tests, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stably overall, with low latency and wide coverage. Beginners can prioritize trying these two.
