Recently, I tinkered with virtual phone number verification again, and I’ve definitely stepped into some pitfalls before. Sometimes you just need a temporary number to register for overseas websites or test APIs, and buying a new SIM card is too troublesome, so verification platforms become the first choice. I’ve used quite a few platforms, some don’t receive messages, some have delays of half a day, and later I summarized a few decent ones to share my experience.

Basically, virtual phone number verification platforms are services that rent temporary numbers to receive verification codes, covering multiple countries. After registration, you select a desired number, and the verification code is displayed directly on the page. Unlike regular phone numbers, virtual numbers are usually billed per use, and some platforms also support monthly packages, depending on your needs.

I’ve used SMS-Activate a few times; the verification code generally arrives within 10 seconds, and it covers many countries, suitable for cross-border testing. The US number ranges from Super Cloud SMS are also okay, taking about 10-30 seconds; Chinese number ranges are faster, usually within 5-20 seconds. 5SIM’s interface is quite user-friendly, with clear API documentation, and Google and Twitter can receive messages normally. Xiaoniao verification mainly used for testing domestic apps, arriving within 5-15 seconds, with good cost performance. There’s also Getsmscode, which is cheap but sometimes delayed on less popular platforms.

When using virtual phone numbers, be aware that shared numbers are often previously registered, and verification codes may have delays, especially for less common countries or apps. It’s recommended to choose reputable platforms and avoid blindly buying cheap ones. My experience is, if you’re just testing APIs, any platform supporting API is fine, but for stable registration on a specific website, it’s best to prepare several numbers so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid. Some platforms support one-click number switching, which is very practical and can prevent waste. If you don’t receive the message, try switching to a different country number or refresh; sometimes the target service blocks virtual number ranges. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stably, with low latency and wide country coverage, worth trying.
