Recently, I’ve been messing around with virtual numbers for receiving SMS, and I’ve definitely run into quite a few pitfalls before. Some SMS verification platforms simply don’t receive the code, while others have delays that last forever. Over time, I figured out the tricks, and I want to share these experiences with everyone.
Basically, SMS verification platforms are just renting temporary phone numbers to receive SMS codes. It’s especially convenient when registering on foreign websites or testing APIs, as you don’t need to buy a new SIM card or expose your real number. I personally use five platforms: SMS-Activate is the fastest, usually delivering the code within 10 seconds, and it covers many countries. Super Cloud SMS is used for testing domestic apps; US numbers typically arrive in about 20 seconds, Chinese numbers are even faster, sometimes within 5 seconds. 5SIM has a clean interface, clear API documentation, and decent stability. Bird Number has the best cost-performance ratio; for domestic app testing, you can usually receive the code within 15 seconds, though it may sometimes get stuck during peak times. Getsmscode is cheap, but some less popular platforms might have delays, making it suitable for light users.
When using SMS verification platforms, there are a few pitfalls to avoid: don’t rely on just one number, it’s best to prepare several because some number segments might be blocked by the target service; some are shared numbers, which can lead to issues if someone else has registered with them; also, never use virtual numbers as your long-term primary number—privacy and security are not guaranteed. My experience is, if it’s just for API testing, choosing any platform that supports API is enough. But if you need stable registration on a specific overseas site, it’s better to top up multiple numbers so you can switch immediately if one becomes invalid.
By the way, some platforms support a one-click number switch feature, which is really useful to avoid wasting time. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stably. If you need this kind of service, you can start by trying these two.
