Recently, I needed to register on some overseas websites and realized that some platforms require real phone number verification, but I didn't want to use my own number. So I researched some SMS receiving platforms, and I didn't expect them to be quite useful. Basically, SMS receiving platforms provide virtual phone numbers to receive SMS verification codes, which can protect privacy and facilitate testing. I’ve encountered many pitfalls before, but now I’ve found a few more stable ones.

SMS-Activate and 5SIM are the ones I use most often. Both platforms deliver verification codes very quickly, usually within 10-30 seconds, and they cover all countries. The former is suitable for cross-border application testing, while the latter has a more user-friendly interface and clear API documentation. If you're mainly working on domestic applications, Super Cloud SMS and XiaoNiao SMS are more suitable; Chinese number segments respond within 5-20 seconds, and they offer good value. Getsmscode is cheaper but mainly suitable for common domestic applications; niche platforms may experience delays.

There are a few things to watch out for when using SMS receiving platforms. Some numbers are shared, which can lead to them being used by others; if you encounter this, just switch to another number. Verification codes may be delayed, especially for less common countries or applications, so it’s helpful to prepare several backup numbers. Also, don’t choose platforms just because they’re cheap; pick reputable, active ones. Don’t rely on SMS receiving platforms as your long-term main number, as security and privacy cannot be guaranteed.

My experience is that if you're just testing interfaces, any SMS receiving platform that supports API is enough. But if you need stable registration on a specific overseas website, it’s best to top up multiple numbers at once so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid. Some platforms also support one-click number switching, which is very practical. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the best—they have low latency and wide country coverage. I recommend trying these two first.
