Recently, I often need to use virtual numbers to register various websites, and it turns out that SMS receiving platforms really can save a lot of trouble. Instead of buying a new card every time, it’s better to rent a temporary number—this protects your privacy and also makes the process quick and convenient.
I’ve stepped into plenty of pitfalls myself. Some platforms literally can’t receive SMS, while others are painfully slow. Later, I worked out a few that are relatively reliable: SMS-Activate and 5SIM deliver the most stable performance. You can basically receive verification codes within 10 seconds, and they cover more countries as well. The US number ranges from Super Cloud SMS are also good—most messages arrive within 10–30 seconds. Chinese number ranges can even be received and acknowledged within 5–20 seconds. Bird SMS is suitable for testing domestic applications; in most cases, you’ll see results within 5–15 seconds. Getsmscode is cheap, but occasionally less popular platforms may lag.
When using SMS receiving platforms, there are a few pitfalls to watch out for. First, some numbers are shared and can be registered by other people. Second, verification codes really can be delayed—especially for less common countries or apps. And third, don’t just pick a platform because it’s cheaper. From my experience, if you’re only testing an interface, it’s fine to choose any that supports an API. But if you need to register overseas websites, it’s best to top up several numbers in case you need them in a pinch.
Finally, a reminder: SMS receiving platforms are tools for privacy protection and testing. Don’t use them for anything illegal, non-compliant, or otherwise improper. Choose platforms with good reputation and high activity, and don’t treat virtual numbers as your long-term main numbers—otherwise privacy and security can’t be guaranteed. Some platforms offer a one-click number-switching feature, which is especially practical and helps you avoid wasted effort.
