Google I/O 2025's star product Project Mariner has been discontinued.
CryptoWorld Network news reports that Google’s AI agent product Project Mariner, which was a key focus of its demonstration at I/O 2025, was taken offline on May 4. The shutdown page says that the related technology has been migrated to other Google products and directs users to the Gemini agent. As early as two months ago, Wired reporter Max Zeff reported that Google had reassigned members of the Project Mariner team to higher-priority projects, as the rise of competing agents such as OpenClaw forced Google to reallocate resources. Project Mariner went from being a spotlight at I/O 2025 to being officially shut down in less than a year. With only two weeks remaining until Google I/O 2026, Google is under pressure to roll out more powerful AI agent products.
