On May 6, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated to reporters at the White House, “Operation Epic Fury has concluded, and we have achieved the objectives of this operation.” He also explained that the next goal for the U.S. is to establish a secure passage area supported by naval and air forces to restore the ability of ships to transit and gradually rebuild confidence in the safety of shipping routes. Meanwhile, Trump posted on social media that the ‘Freedom Plan’ for facilitating navigation through the Strait of Hormuz will be temporarily suspended. “Based on requests from Pakistan and other countries, and given our significant military victories in the campaign against Iran, as well as substantial progress made towards a comprehensive final agreement with Iranian representatives, both sides have agreed that while the blockade measures will continue to be effective, the ‘Freedom Plan’ (which involves the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a period to observe whether this agreement can ultimately be reached and signed.”
