DeepMind UK employees vote to form a union over U.S. defense contract

Golden Finance reports that on May 6th, according to internal employee letters cited by The Guardian in the UK, Google DeepMind employees in the UK, a subsidiary of Alphabet, have voted to form a union due to ethical concerns over the newly established artificial intelligence agreement involving the U.S. military. The report states that after completing authorized voting in April, employees in the research department requested management to officially recognize the two labor groups as joint representatives. It is reported that employees oppose the use of advanced systems for warfare and mentioned the collaboration with the Pentagon announced last Friday, as well as the company’s existing arrangements to provide cloud computing services to the Israeli government.
