Trump Suggests U.S. Military May Need to Enter Iran to Secure Nuclear Materials

On May 6, Anadolu Agency reported that Trump stated on Tuesday that the U.S. military must enter Iran to carry out a mission to ensure the safety of nuclear assets. Trump said, “We are going to have to pay a price because we must go into Iran and take the nuclear weapons.” He seemed to refer to approximately 1,000 pounds (453.6 kilograms) of enriched uranium reportedly buried under the rubble of targeted sites during the joint U.S.-Israeli offensive last June. Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif confirmed that these materials are “under the rubble,” and there are currently no immediate plans for retrieval. Trump insisted that the U.S. has effectively destroyed Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He added that it would take the Iranians weeks to reach these materials, and the U.S. “will not let them dig down,” as the military maintains continuous surveillance.
