BitcoinCore developers disclose high-severity vulnerability CVE-2024-52911, approximately 43% of nodes remain affected
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Bitcoin Core developer discloses a high-severity vulnerability numbered CVE-2024-52911, which affects versions 0.14.1 through 28.4. Attackers can craft special blocks to cause remote crashes and execute code on other nodes. The vulnerability was discovered and privately reported by developer Cory Fields in November 2024. The fix was merged in December 2024 and officially released in version 29 in April 2025.
Currently, the last vulnerable version in the 28.x series was discontinued on April 19, 2026. However, since Bitcoin node upgrades are voluntary, estimates show that approximately 43% of nodes are still running outdated versions affected by the vulnerability, posing a potential security risk.
