Samsung Securities is expected to rise strongly in the opening session, driven by anticipation of cooperation with U.S. online broker Interactive Brokers (IBKR).

According to data from the Korea Exchange, Samsung Securities on the 6th opened the early session up 6.38% from the previous trading day, at 146,700 won. The opening price was 161,100 won, and during the session it briefly climbed to 163,000 won, setting a new 52-week high.

The stock’s strength is interpreted as the continued effect of growing expectations for the previously much-discussed cooperation with Interactive Brokers. On the 4th, Samsung Securities came under market spotlight due to news about the related partnership, and its share price had surged by 28%.

The market believes that overseas investor clients of Interactive Brokers could trade Korean stocks on the Interactive Brokers app through Samsung Securities as an intermediary broker, and this expectation is turning into buying momentum.

Behind this expectation are also factors related to regulatory changes. Previously, starting in April last year, the Financial Committee introduced a regulatory exception allowing non-resident foreign investors to place unified orders and complete settlement via local securities firms’ comprehensive accounts, without needing to open a separate domestic securities firm account.

The securities industry is also watching the possibility of improving profitability. Baek Doo-sang, a researcher at Korea Investment & Securities, said that while it is still too early to discuss the market’s specific fee/revenue structure, if the market is developed, Samsung Securities’ annual brokerage fees could increase by 5.5%. Considering the positive effect of overseas individual investors’ capital inflows on the Korean stock market, the expansion of comprehensive account services is a significant positive factor for both the securities industry overall and Samsung Securities.
