Recently when I check on-chain data, I often feel like it’s “lagging,” but in many cases it’s not your connection—it’s that middle layer that’s running out of breath. The front end usually requests subgraphs/indexers; the indexer has to first ingest new blocks, run the mappings, write to the database, and then output the results. Once the chain suddenly spikes in activity (things like liquidations, frontrunning, or popular mints), it’s very common for the indexing to fall behind by a few blocks, so it looks like the data has stalled. And if you bypass the middle layer and hit the RPC directly, you might still get throttled: when public nodes are busy, you get a 429, or they may simply queue you—resulting in the same request being fast one moment and slow the next.
To put it bluntly, “real-time” data is a cost issue—who pays for it gets stability. Lately, the whole staking/shared security setup has been criticized as a “nested” system, but I think it’s pretty similar to this: the stacked earnings on top are smooth, and once congestion or risk shows up at the bottom layer, all the latency and jitter get exposed. These days, when I look at big market moves, I pay more attention to two data sources, so don’t get fooled by “pseudo-real-time” data fed by a single point. Talk again next time
