BlockBeats News, May 5 — Due to tight capacity in advanced process manufacturing and a surge in AI demand, Apple is evaluating adjustments to its long-term reliance on a single foundry system, having initiated preliminary contacts with Intel and Samsung Electronics to explore introducing new chip manufacturing sources, but no actual orders have been placed yet.

Sources say that Apple is assessing Intel’s foundry capabilities on one hand, and examining Samsung’s advanced wafer fab under construction in Texas on the other. However, Apple remains cautious about non-TSMC technology ecosystems, and cooperation progress is uncertain.

Supply shortages are the core background for this adjustment. Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that shortages of iPhone and Mac chips have limited company growth, with bottlenecks mainly concentrated in the advanced process nodes that SoCs depend on.

As AI computing power demand and end-user AI device needs rise simultaneously, products like Mac mini, Mac Studio, and iPhone 17 Pro are under supply pressure, and it is expected to take several months to achieve supply-demand balance.

Industry insiders believe that introducing diversified foundries aligns with Apple’s consistent strategy of dispersing supply chain risks, but in the field of advanced processes, TSMC remains irreplaceable in the short term. If Intel and Samsung can secure orders, it will significantly boost their foundry business competitiveness.
