International Energy Agency: Methane emissions remain high in 2025; emission reductions can promote energy security
International Energy Agency’s report “Global Methane Tracker 2026” released on the 4th shows that in 2025, global methane emissions related to fossil fuels remain at an “extremely high” level, with no signs of decline worldwide. In the context of the current energy crisis, managing methane emissions can bring significant energy security benefits.
The report states that in order to combat global warming and improve air quality, many countries and companies have set methane reduction targets in recent years. However, in 2025, methane emissions from the energy sector approached historic highs, indicating a clear gap between reduction commitments and implementation. The report points out that reducing methane emissions also helps enhance energy security. After shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was disrupted, global liquefied natural gas supplies decreased by about 20%, making energy security a major concern for countries. (Xinhua News Agency)
