At 5 May local time, the Thai Cabinet approved the abolition of a maritime memorandum with Cambodia. Thai Prime Minister Anutin said that this will not affect Thailand’s border stability. The memorandum was signed in 2001 and focused on negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia regarding maritime boundaries, including the joint utilization of oil resources. On April 23, Thai Prime Minister Anutin said that the memorandum on overlapping maritime areas, signed between Cambodia and Thailand during former Prime Minister Thaksin’s administration, will be abolished. Thai Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Tharawut Thabtiang said the reason for abolishing the memorandum is that it has been used for many years but has made no progress. Cambodia has now joined the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and Thailand can negotiate within the framework of the convention. (CCTV News)
