Continuous 45-year decline: Japan's number of children under 15 hits a new low

Data released by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on the 4th shows that as of April 1st, the number of children under 15 in Japan is 13.29 million, a decrease of 350k from last year, continuing a 45-year decline; currently, children under 15 make up 10.8% of the total population, down 0.3 percentage points from last year; both the number of children and their proportion of the population have hit new lows since relevant statistics began in 1950. According to Japan’s Kyodo News, the number of children under 15 in Japan peaked at 29.89 million in 1954 and has been decreasing since, now more than halved. After the first baby boom period from 1947 to 1949, in 1950, the proportion of children under 15 in the total population once reached 35.4%, but then the percentage generally declined. (Xinhua)
