According to Reuters, Italy's Central Bank Deputy Governor Chiara Scotti stated that the European Union should consider advancing the tokenization expansion of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) to adapt to financial technology changes. She said that new forms of private currencies, such as electronic money tokens and tokenized bank deposits based on distributed ledger technology, could impact the roles of traditional banks and central banks.

The central bank should design infrastructure that allows public and private currencies to operate together. The European Central Bank is currently promoting the digital euro, and Scotti said that Europe's existing payment arrangements should also consider evolving toward tokenization.
