I just read about The Merge by Pak and I can't believe it's the most expensive NFT in the world at 91.8 million. The crazy part is that it wasn't sold to a single person, but 28,000 collectors bought pieces of the same NFT. Each paid $575 per unit. So technically, it's the most expensive but also the most distributed—does that make sense?
Then there's Everydays by Beeple with 69 million at Christie's. The guy created a digital artwork every day for 5,000 days and sold it as a massive collage. He started selling it for $100 and ended up at nearly $70 million. The difference is that this was a single piece bought by one collector.
What surprises me is how CryptoPunks dominates the lists. The #5822 (un alien azul) llegó a 23 millones. Estos punks se lanzaron gratis en 2017 y ahora algunos valen más que casas. El #7804 is also on the list with rare features like a pipe that only 317 of the 10,000 punks have.
Clock by Pak in collaboration with Julian Assange is interesting for another reason: 52.7 million but with a political purpose. It's a counter that records Assange's days of imprisonment and updates daily. People paid millions for a cause, not just for art.
Beeple has about three NFTs in the top 15, including Human One (29 million), which is a kinetic sculpture in 16K that changes content based on the time of day. The guy can update it remotely, so it's art that evolves in real time.
What strikes me most is that the NFT market remains incredibly volatile. Some of these records were set in 2021-2022 when everything was at maximum hype. Today, the market is different, but these are still the most expensive NFTs in the world by transaction volume. Some collectors bought entry points into digital art history, others simply speculated. Anyway, it's fascinating to see how digital art went from being free to worth millions in just a few years.
