You know, the Pepe the Frog story is much more interesting than just a sad emoji that everyone has seen. I once delved into it and realized that this meme is a whole cultural evolution.

It all started in 2005 when artist Matt Furie drew the character Pepe in his comic Boy's Club. Initially, it was just a funny character, but then in one of the issues, there was a scene where Pepe is taking a dump with his pants down to his ankles and says "Feels good, man" — and that’s how the first meme was born. Classic.

Then what usually happens to good memes happened. In 2008, Pepe the Frog appeared on 4chan, and real magic began. People started creating different versions — Sad Pepe, Smug Pepe, Feels Bad Man, and many others. Everyone added their own emotional variant, and the meme turned into a universal language for expressing feelings online.

The most interesting part is that Pepe became a symbol of almost any emotional state — sadness, loneliness, even anger and happiness at the same time. The meme was so versatile that it started being used everywhere. Then, in 2015-2016, something nobody expected happened — it was co-opted by the alt-right in the US and began to be used for political purposes, including campaigns supporting Trump. This sparked huge controversy. The Anti-Defamation League even listed some versions of Pepe as hate symbols, although Furie was strongly opposed to this misuse of his character.

But the meme didn’t die. On the contrary, it was reborn anew. On 4chan, the so-called “Rare Pepe” appeared — unique, rare versions of the meme that people even started collecting and selling as collectible images. And here’s where it gets really interesting for the crypto community: Pepe the Frog became an inspiration for entire NFT projects and tokens, especially on the Counterparty platform.

This shows how a simple meme can go from a comic strip to a cultural symbol and eventually become part of blockchain. Honestly, the idea of creating your own version of Pepe with a philosophical view on decentralization or a rare meme for your community sounds quite logical in the context of how internet culture evolves.
