Just caught something interesting about Ethereum's major upgrade from back in 2024. The Dencun mainnet activation on March 13 was actually a pretty significant moment for the network, and it all came down to EIP-4844 rolling out that day.
So here's what went down - the eip-4844 launch date was March 13, 2024, and it introduced what they call protodanksharding. The upgrade hit at block height 269568, which was around 21:55 Beijing time. What made this actually matter for users was the transaction fee impact, especially for Layer 2 solutions. We saw fees drop to something like $0.01 on L2s, which was wild compared to what people were paying before.
The core devs, including eric.eth, had been pushing for this for a while. The temporary data blob mechanism that EIP-4844 brought to the table fundamentally changed how Ethereum handles L2 scaling. Instead of expensive calldata, you get these cheaper blobs that expire after about 18 days. It's one of those technical improvements that doesn't sound flashy but actually moves the needle on accessibility.
Looking back, that eip-4844 launch date really marked a turning point for Ethereum's scalability story. Made the whole network feel more usable for regular transactions, especially if you were doing anything on Arbitrum, Optimism, or the other L2s. Worth remembering as one of those upgrades that actually delivered on the promise.
