The Review Conference of the Non-Proliferation Treaty Opens; UN Secretary-General Warns of Rising Nuclear Risks

On April 27th local time, the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) opened at the United Nations headquarters in New York. In his speech, the UN Secretary-General warned that the world is currently experiencing a “collective amnesia” about the dangers of nuclear weapons, with nuclear threats rising again and the arms control system continuously being eroded. He called on all countries to fulfill their commitments under the treaty and reaffirmed that disarmament and non-proliferation are the only true paths to peace. (CCTV News)
