Have you ever wondered how much money there is in the world? Because this question actually opens up a very interesting perspective. Let’s take another look at the numbers to understand the real size of the global economy.
When we talk about global money supply, we’re not just talking about the cash in your pocket—this is about a much wider scope. If you ask how much money there is in the world, including all physical currency, bank accounts, investments, and cryptocurrencies, the answer is quite large: approximately $37 trillion. Yes, we’re talking about trillions.
But that’s not all. When we factor in more complex financial instruments, such as investment vehicles, derivative products, and cryptocurrency pools, the total exceeds 1.2 quadrillion. At this point, the question of how much money there is in the world becomes even more complex.
If we talk only about the physical money in your pocket and wallet, roughly $6.6 trillion worth of coins and banknotes are in circulation worldwide. But when we add bank deposits, liquid assets, and other measures of money supply, the figure reaches tens of trillions.
In fact, as you think about these figures, a question comes to mind: how much of this money is ours? If we consider that the world population is over 8 billion, then the amount per person… may be disappointing for many. But new financial tools like cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology have started to change these dynamics. Assets like Bitcoin offer an alternative path outside the traditional monetary system. Remembering the future means asking these kinds of questions today. 🫣
