Just noticed something interesting about privacy in the telecom space. There's this new service called Phreeli that's quietly disrupting how we think about mobile carriers in the U.S. Basically, you can sign up with just your zip code. No name, no address, nothing. You just need a number to get started.
What caught my attention is how Zooko Wilcox from Zcash got involved as a consultant. He's been pretty vocal about how traditional phone companies collect way too much data on their users. The guy actually pays his own Phreeli bill in cash under a fake name, which says a lot about how serious he is about this.
The tech behind it is solid too. They're using zero-knowledge proofs for billing, which means your payment info stays completely private. You can prepay with credit cards if you want, but here's the kicker: they also accept privacy coins like Zcash and Monero. With Zcash currently sitting around $413 and Monero near $394, there's real demand for these kinds of payment options.
Phreeli launched back in 2019 and has already raised $5 million. They're running on T-Mobile's infrastructure but keeping all customer data completely separate, which is the whole point. The service is targeting people who are tired of carriers treating their personal information like a commodity.
What makes Phreeli stand out is the philosophy behind it. It's not just about being anonymous for the sake of it. It's about giving ordinary people a real choice when it comes to their privacy. In an era where data collection is the default, having a carrier that actually respects your boundaries feels like a pretty big deal. Worth keeping an eye on as privacy-focused solutions keep gaining traction.
