Cryptocurrency or digital currency is a digital asset designed as a medium of exchange using strong cryptography technology to secure transactions, control new units, and verify transfers. Unlike fiat currencies (rupiah/dollar), crypto is decentralized, meaning it is not controlled by any central bank or government, but supported by blockchain technology—a distributed digital ledger spread across many computers. In Indonesia, crypto is recognized as a traded commodity, supervised by Bappebti. Although often considered a speculative instrument, the blockchain technology behind it has the potential to transform the future financial landscape into a more inclusive and open one. Bitcoin, born in 2008, is the first and most popular cryptocurrency, followed by Ethereum and thousands of other assets. Its main advantages include fast cross-border transactions and high transparency. However, crypto also carries high risks due to extreme price volatility and potential digital security threats.
