Cryptocurrency lending sites attract customers with high-interest offers on deposited cryptocurrencies. But what these investors often overlook is the hidden risk behind these re-pledged returns. Such practices are susceptible to significant losses if borrowers or platforms mismanage user collateral.
Understanding Re-pledging in Cryptocurrency Lending
Re-pledging is a process where a platform reinvests users' crypto collateral to generate additional returns. Under this process, the lender can loan out the cryptocurrencies to a third party, such as market makers. Although this increases capital efficiency, it exposes users to greater risks.
Cryptocurrencies are often lent on margin on platforms or deposited into decentralized finance protocols. If these investments fail, your coins may not be returned. Therefore, even after repaying your original loan, your assets remain at risk.
