Just looked into Pakistan's currency history and the depreciation story is actually wild. Back in 1947 when the country was founded, 1 USD was worth just 3.31 PKR. The rupee held pretty stable for decades through the 50s and 60s. But then things started shifting - by the early 70s it jumped to 11 PKR per dollar, and by the late 70s settled around 10 PKR. Nothing too crazy yet. The real acceleration happened from the 90s onwards though. In 1989 we're looking at 20 PKR per dollar, then by 2001 it had already climbed to 63.50 PKR. That's a significant move in just over a decade. The dollar rate in year 2001 in Pakistan marked a pretty clear turning point in the currency's trajectory. After 2001, the decline just kept accelerating - 2008 hit 81 PKR, then 2018 jumped to 139 PKR, and by 2023 we were at 286 PKR per dollar. Currently sitting around 277 PKR in 2024. Over 75 years, the rupee went from 3.31 to 277 - that's roughly an 83x devaluation. Crazy to see how much purchasing power eroded over that span.
