The U.S. Central Command announced on social media today (May 4) that the U.S. military will begin supporting the “rescue operation guided by U.S. President Trump for ships trapped in the Strait of Hormuz.” U.S. military support includes deploying missile destroyers, more than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, and drones, as well as 15,000 service members. The U.S. Central Command said the mission “will provide support to merchant ships seeking to pass through this important international trade route.” CENTCOM Commander Cooper said that while supporting this “defensive” mission, the U.S. will continue to maintain a maritime blockade against Iran.
