MicroStrategy Ceases Weekly Bitcoin Purchases: Large Reserves of 818,334 BTC Remain

Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy (formerly MicroStrategy), announced in an official statement dated May 3, 2026, that the company will not be buying Bitcoin this week. The company's total holdings remain stable at 818,334 BTC, with a current market value exceeding $64.4 billion. Saylor, in a post on platform X, stated, "No purchases this week," adding, "We will be back to work next week," indicating that this pause is temporary.
Corrupted Record and Financial Calendar
This decision marks the second time the company has halted a nearly weekly habit, which has been maintained since 2020 and has become a hallmark of 2026. Previously, a streak of uninterrupted purchases lasting 13 weeks ended in late March 2026. This pause comes just two days before the company is set to release its first-quarter 2026 financial results on May 5, 2026. Market expectations are for a loss of around -$3.41 per share due to unrealized losses totaling up to $14.5 billion based on GAAP standards, stemming from asset valuation in the portfolio based on market prices.
New Financing Model: STRC Preference
Experts agree that this pause is not "panic" but a "shift to a new financing strategy." Instead of funding Bitcoin purchases through share dilution, the company is now using STRC, a preferred stock offering an 11.5% annual dividend yield, as the primary instrument. This shift is interpreted as a strategic change in the company's Bitcoin holdings, moving from a "volume" approach to a "yield" approach.
Large Portfolio and Future Vision
The company, which controls about 3.9% of the total supply with 818,334 BTC, maintains a target of reaching 1 million BTC by the end of 2026. This position, acquired at an average cost of $75,537, has an unrealized gain of 4.24% at current prices. The initial market reaction to this transformation has been positive: Bitcoin remains above the $78,000 level this week despite the lack of institutional buying support. This is seen as a strong signal that market dependence on a single institutional buyer is decreasing.
Next Tuesday's earnings report will be a key determinant in assessing the sustainability of this new financing model and the company's purchasing strategy for the rest of the year.
