U.S. Central Command said on May 4 that it began a “Freedom of Navigation” mission in the Strait of Hormuz with 15,000 personnel. The operation also includes a missile destroyer, more than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, and multi-domain unmanned platforms to assist merchant vessels transiting the route. The strait carries a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade, and the mission follows the State Department’s earlier Maritime Freedom Initiative with the Department of Defense.
