Just looked at the latest cost of living data for 2025 and it's wild how expensive certain cities have become. Zurich tops the list as the most expensive cities in the world with a score of 112.5, meaning you're paying about 12.5% more than New York just to exist there. Geneva and Basel follow close behind at 111.4 and 110.7 respectively. Honestly, Switzerland just dominates - six of the top spots are all Swiss cities. You've got Lausanne, Lugano, and Bern rounding out the top tier.

What caught my eye is how the index works. They use New York as the baseline at 100 points, so anything above that is pricier and anything below is cheaper. When you see Zurich at 112.5, that's literally 12.5% more expensive than NYC. The calculation factors in housing, food, transportation, utilities, entertainment, and local purchasing power all combined.

The US has serious representation too. New York sits at exactly 100 as the reference point, but you've also got Honolulu at 94.4, San Francisco at 90.7, Seattle at 86, and even Boston and Washington DC making the top 20. California's real estate situation is no joke - both LA and San Diego hit 76.3. Then there's Singapore at 85.3 and Oslo at 84.3 showing that most expensive cities in the world aren't just concentrated in one region.

What's interesting is that while these cities have astronomical costs, places like Zurich also pay massive salaries - averaging between CHF 7,000 and 9,000 monthly, which is roughly $7,900 to $10,170. So yeah, it's expensive, but the wages actually help offset it. Still, if you're thinking about relocating to any of these most expensive cities in the world, better start saving now.
