Just looked into Pakistan's currency history and it's actually wild how much the rupee has depreciated against the dollar over the past 75+ years.

So back in 1947 when Pakistan became independent, the dollar rate in 1947 in pakistan was just 3.31 PKR. For almost a decade, it stayed locked at that rate. Then in the mid-1950s it started to shift to around 3.91-4.76 PKR and basically held there for another 15 years.

But here's where it gets interesting. From the 1970s onwards, the depreciation picked up pace. By 1980, it had moved to nearly 10 PKR. Then the 1990s saw faster erosion - jumped from 20 PKR in 1989 to 51 PKR by 2000. The 2000s were relatively stable around 57-85 PKR range.

Then 2008 onwards accelerated things again. By 2013 it hit 107 PKR, and the real shock came 2018-2019 when it spiked to 139-163 PKR. The pandemic and recent years pushed it even further - 240 PKR in 2022, 286 PKR in 2023, and now hovering around 277 PKR in 2024.

So that's roughly an 83x depreciation in 77 years. The dollar rate in pakistan's currency story is basically a textbook case of long-term inflation and currency devaluation. Pretty crazy when you see it all laid out like this.
