Just went down a rabbit hole looking at Pakistan's currency history and it's honestly wild how much the rupee has depreciated over the decades. Back in 1947 when the country was founded, 1 USD was just 3.31 PKR. For nearly a decade it stayed locked at that rate, then started moving in the 1950s.

What really caught my attention was the acceleration starting from the late 1980s onwards. Through the 90s you can see this steady erosion happening year after year. By 2000, we're already at 51.90 PKR per dollar. The 2012 dollar rate in pakistan had climbed to 96.50, and if you look at the trajectory, it kept accelerating from there.

The really sharp moves came post-2018. From 139 in 2018 to 163 in 2019, then jumping to 168 by 2020. Then 2022 hit different with a spike to 240. Last year it was at 286, though it's settled around 277 now in 2024. That's almost 84x depreciation from independence. When you see the 2012 dollar rate in pakistan compared to today, it shows how much pressure the rupee has faced in just over a decade.

Makes you think about what drives these long-term currency movements and why some periods see gradual change while others are more chaotic. The whole trajectory from 1947 to now is basically a masterclass in currency depreciation.
