On April 28, a U.S. federal court sentenced Saipan resident Sze Man Yu Inos, also known as ‘Yuki,’ to 71 months in prison for committing Bitcoin-related fraud. The U.S. Department of Justice announced on April 27 that the 30-year-old scammer specifically targeted elderly women in Saipan and Guam through telecommunications fraud between November 2020 and January 2022. She falsely claimed to come from a wealthy family in China and achieved success through Bitcoin investments. By establishing emotional connections with her victims—often saying ‘you are like my mother’—she gained their trust and persuaded them to invest in Bitcoin. She later expanded her fraudulent activities to Washington State and California. In addition to imprisonment, the court ordered her to pay a total of $769,355 in restitution and imposed a criminal forfeiture judgment of $684,848 on her personal property. Recent reports indicate a rising trend in cryptocurrency-related fraud, with losses reaching a record $11.3 billion last year.
