I remember when SETI@Home was at the peak of popularity — it seemed like the perfect way to earn passive income by simply leaving your computer on. But in the early 2020s, the project closed its doors to new participants, and many were left without this income source.
Good news: this is not the end of the story. In fact, the world of distributed computing is much broader than it appears at first glance. The idea is simple — combine the computing resources of different computers to solve complex problems. It sounds technical, but essentially it’s like Airbnb, only instead of renting out an apartment, you rent out the processing power of your machine.
What interesting options are available right now? I’ll start with Spacemesh — a cryptocurrency network created specifically for ordinary people. Unlike Bitcoin, which requires powerful hardware, Spacemesh uses a Proof-of-Space mechanism. This means the main resource is disk space, not electricity. Minimum requirements: an Intel or AMD processor, 1 GB of RAM, and a stable internet connection. The network rewards participants every two weeks, and the system is designed so that large players cannot dominate completely. Passive income here is real and fair.
There’s another approach — HyperCycle, which creates a network for artificial intelligence. Here, your computer becomes part of a distributed supercomputer serving AI systems. You need to purchase a node license and deposit at least 1024 HYPC tokens, but in return, you gain access to advanced computations.
For Web3 enthusiasts, there’s Fleek Network — a decentralized content delivery network. Instead of relying on Cloudflare and similar services, content is delivered through nodes run by ordinary people. An interesting point: the network can expand even into small towns and villages where traditional CDNs lack infrastructure.
If you have plenty of free disk space, check out Storj. It’s a decentralized cloud storage platform where all content is encrypted, and only you have access to your files. Just install the app, allocate part of your disk, and start earning monthly payments.
And another option — Hyperlink, which positions itself as a “world supercomputer.” Users report earning potential up to $8,600 per year with continuous computer operation. Payments are made via PayPal, bank transfers, and other methods.
What’s important to understand? Yes, your computer will run 24/7, which might slightly affect its performance and lifespan. But if you’re not using the full capacity of your machine, it’s almost unnoticeable. Honestly, passive income through your computer is one of the lowest-risk ways to earn extra money if you simply have unused equipment lying around.
If you’re interested in this topic, it’s worth studying each project separately and choosing what suits you best. The distributed computing market is developing rapidly, and the options are increasing.
