Just looked at Pakistan's currency history and wow, the depreciation story is wild. Back in 1947 when the country was born, 1 dollar to PKR was just 3.31. That rate actually held steady for almost a decade, can you imagine? Fixed exchange rates in those early years.

But then things started shifting. By the mid-50s it moved to 3.91, then 4.76 and stayed there for quite a while. The real acceleration happened in 1972 when it jumped to 11 PKR per dollar. That's when you could see the pressure building.

The 80s and 90s saw consistent depreciation - went from around 10 PKR in 1980 to 51.90 by 2000. Then the 2000s brought more pressure, hitting 84 by 2009. But the major hit came after 2017 - jumped to 110, then 139 in 2018, and things really accelerated. By 2019 it was already at 163.75.

Last few years have been rough though. 2022 saw 240 PKR per dollar, then 286 in 2023. Now in 2024 it's around 277. That's an 8,300% depreciation from independence. The currency story really shows how much economic pressure Pakistan's faced over these decades. Pretty stark when you see it mapped out like this.
