Do you know when you want to understand the crypto universe better but you don’t want to read boring whitepapers? Well, there’s a much more fun way: watching movies about cryptocurrencies that explore everything from technology to real-life mysteries.
I was thinking about this recently and realized there’s a lot of interesting content out there. From action thrillers to deep documentaries, cinema has already explored plenty of this fascinating world of Bitcoin, blockchain, and more.
Let’s start with dramas and thrillers. Crypto (2019) is the kind of movie that hooks you—following a Wall Street banker who uncovers a conspiracy involving cryptocurrencies and money laundering. Nothing educational—just pure suspense. If you want something lighter, O Grande Roubo do Bitcoin (2016) is a Vietnamese action film where thieves try to capture a cybercriminal. Think Ocean’s 11, but in the crypto world. StartUp (2016-2018), the TV series, also deserves a mention—it tells the story of creating a digital currency called GenCoin in Miami, with plenty of drama and tension along the way.
Now, if you really want to go deeper, documentaries are essential. Máquina de Confiança: A História da Blockchain (2018), directed by Alex Winter, is a serious deep dive into how blockchain technology will transform industries. A Ascensão e Queda do Bitcoin (2014) takes you through Bitcoin’s journey through the eyes of miners and early adopters. Banking on Bitcoin (2016) is great for anyone who wants to understand the history of Bitcoin and the regulatory challenges it faced. Evangelho do Bitcoin (2015) goes even further, exploring philosophical implications and featuring Roger Ver, the Bitcoin evangelist.
There are also some more recent and creative productions. Corrida Cripto (2020) focuses on the rise of women in the crypto space, which is pretty interesting. Bitcoin: Além da Bolha (2018) questions whether Bitcoin is really a bubble or the future of money. Não Confie em Ninguém: A Caça ao Rei Cripto (2022) is a Netflix documentary that tells the shocking true story of Gerald Cotten, CEO of QuadrigaCX, who died mysteriously—leaving 250 million in crypto locked away. Decifrado (2021) is more of a satire—a dark comedy about a government team trying to pressure Satoshi Nakamoto into revealing his secrets. Dinheiro de Código Aberto (2020) follows Dragonchain as it faces regulatory challenges.
The great thing is that these crypto films really offer everything. You learn about the technology, see compelling stories, and understand the challenges and potential of this industry. Some are educational, others are pure entertainment, but all of them bring unique perspectives on cryptocurrencies and their impact on society.
If you’re a crypto enthusiast, an investor, or just curious, there’s something here for you. The question now is: where do you start? Do you prefer a tense thriller like Crypto, or jump straight into an in-depth documentary like Banking on Bitcoin? Tell us which one you’re going to watch first.
