I just finished a Netflix series about a crypto scam and I have to share it. Ray Trapani's story is one of those cases that shows how easily the crypto industry can be fooled when there is a lack of regulation.

So, Ray Trapani created a fake identity — a Harvard graduate, CEO, with a photo of his grandfather as a business portrait. Sounds like a joke, but it worked. He founded Centra Tech, copied another project's website, and started raising money. People bought in, and he ran advertising campaigns.

And here’s where it gets interesting — Floyd Mayweather and DJ Khaled supported this project. Celebrities promoted the scam, whether they knew or not, but they promoted it. Ray Trapani and his team raised $170 million. $170 million! And what did they do with it? Luxury vacations, expensive cars, they didn’t invest in technology.

Until it finally collapsed. Users started criticizing, the SEC stepped in, Ray Trapani and his partners were charged with illegal ICO promotion and hiding payments from influencers. They pleaded guilty, and went to prison.

There’s a documentary on Netflix I recommend to anyone interested in crypto. It shows how simple these scams are, how easy it is to pretend to be an expert, and how important it is to verify facts before you buy something. Ray Trapani’s story is a lesson for all of us — in crypto, you have to be suspicious and do your research. Don’t fall for things like people once did with Centra Tech.
