Just looked at the latest cost of living rankings and it's pretty wild how dominated these most expensive cities in the world are by Switzerland. Zurich tops the list at 112.5, which means it's roughly 12.5% pricier than New York. Then you've got Geneva at 111.4 and Basel at 110.7. Honestly, the data shows Switzerland basically owns the top six spots completely.
What caught my eye is how the index works. They use New York as the baseline at 100 points, so anything above that means you're paying more for everyday stuff like housing, food, and transport. It's interesting because even though these Swiss cities are expensive, people there earn significantly more too. Average salaries in Zurich run between 7,900 to 10,170 USD monthly, which is crazy high.
The US obviously has some pricey spots on the list. New York sits at 100 as the reference point, but you also see Honolulu, San Francisco, and Seattle all ranking pretty high. California cities especially keep showing up because of tech industry demand pushing housing costs through the roof. Even LA and San Diego crack the top 25.
What's interesting is how these most expensive cities in the world aren't just about raw prices. It's about where the money flows. Tech hubs, finance centers, international organizations all cluster in these places. Singapore shows up in Asia, Tel Aviv and Hong Kong too, but Europe and North America definitely dominate the rankings. Switzerland's wealth is just on another level though.
