Just had a conversation with Janice McAfee that's been sitting with me. If you don't know her story, it's one of those things that sticks with you.
She's been living in Spain for over four years now, doing whatever work she can find just to get by. The woman whose husband was worth over $100 million at one point is now struggling to cover basic expenses. That's the reality of John McAfee wife's current situation - and honestly, it's heartbreaking.
I met John and Janice back at a blockchain conference in Malta in 2018. He was this magnetic, chaotic figure - the kind of person who just commanded attention. She was the calm one, grounded and protective. They seemed genuinely connected. Fast forward to now, and she's stuck in this limbo, unable to move forward because of so many unanswered questions.
Here's what gets me: John McAfee's net worth supposedly tanked from that $100+ million to around $4 million by the time he died. He claimed poverty in 2019, said he couldn't pay a $25 million court judgment. Then authorities claimed he'd actually made $11 million promoting crypto. The whole thing's a mess. He left no will, no estate plan, so Janice inherited essentially nothing. She's living hand to mouth while the world moved on.
But the money isn't even the main thing bothering her. She still doesn't have answers about what actually happened in that Barcelona prison cell. A Catalan court ruled it was suicide over two years ago, but she's never seen the autopsy results. She wants an independent autopsy to know for certain, but it costs €30,000 - money she doesn't have. She just wants to see his body and know the truth.
They talked every single day while he was imprisoned. She doesn't understand how he could have done what they say he did. The jail video doesn't add up to her - they found him with something around his neck, still had a pulse, was breathing, but the guards allegedly didn't remove the obstruction before attempting CPR. She's trained in this stuff and knows that's not how it works.
John had released 31 terabytes of data publicly at some point, but he deliberately never told her what was in it or where it was. He wanted to keep her safe. Even now, she has nothing to hide and knows nothing, so she's not a target. But she's also trapped - can't move forward, can't get closure, can't honor his final wish to be cremated.
What struck me most was how she framed it. She said John was the victim, not her. She's not looking for justice or to fight with Spanish authorities. She just wants the truth and to respect his last wishes. That kind of clarity and grace after everything she's been through is something else.
The Netflix documentary that came out portrayed them as fugitives running wild, but that's not the story Janice wants told. She wants people to remember John correctly, to understand why he chose the path he did. Right now, she's just trying to survive and get the answers she deserves.
